SEIZURE DISORDERS
Initially,
seizures are not thought to be a symptom of MS, however, research
has proven otherwise. Seizures occur as a result of abnormal
electrical discharges of the brain. Seizures can take the following
forms:
- Absence Seizures
- Produce momentary lapses of consciousness without abnormal
movements.
- Complex Seizures
- Produce periods of repetitive activity. The person appears to
be awake but does not respond to external stimuli.
- Paroxsymal Symptoms
- Are sudden, brief attacks of the extremities or loss of tone
in the legs.
- Tonic-Clonic Seizures
- Produce brief episodes of unconsciousness with uncontrollable
jerking movements of the extremities.
Seizure disorders
are diagnosed through history and through a diagnostic test called
an EEG, which records electrical activity in the brain. Seizures can
be controlled using the appropriate anticonvulsant
medication.
