Seizures and MS

SEIZURE DISORDERS
Initially, seizures are not thought to be a symptom of MS, however, research has proven otherwise. Seizures occur as a result of abnormal electrical discharges of the brain. Seizures can take the following forms:

Absence Seizures
Produce momentary lapses of consciousness without abnormal movements.
Complex Seizures
Produce periods of repetitive activity. The person appears to be awake but does not respond to external stimuli.
Paroxsymal Symptoms
Are sudden, brief attacks of the extremities or loss of tone in the legs.
Tonic-Clonic Seizures
Produce brief episodes of unconsciousness with uncontrollable jerking movements of the extremities.

Seizure disorders are diagnosed through history and through a diagnostic test called an EEG, which records electrical activity in the brain. Seizures can be controlled using the appropriate anticonvulsant medication.
