Few shots on the golf course are more satisfying than a well-executed flop shot. Unfortunately, unless you’re Phil Mickelson, the risk is probably not worth the reward. There’s very little margin for error. With the wrong lie, you can swing the club under the ball without advancing it. And, with such a big swing, you’re liable to hit an 80-yard screamer if you catch it thin.

Here’s an alternative technique to try the next time you need a wedge shot to fly high and land softly. Weaken your left-hand grip (for right-handers), turning your hand under the club so that your left palm faces more toward the sky. With your left hand in this weakened position, the clubface will remain open through the hitting zone and your shot will be shorter and fly higher than normal and land like a butterfly with sore feet.

Experiment with this shot on the range. You’ll quickly learn that the more you turn your left hand under the club, the higher and softer (and shorter) the resulting shot will be. This is a versatile technique that you can use on greenside chips as well as full wedges from the fairway or light rough. It’s especially effective for softening slippery downhill chips or on touchy pitch shots where you have little green to work with.

Stack and Tilt: a fad or a little bit closer to a universal golf truth? We'd like your feedback.

Three simple words - Stack and Tilt - have done about as much to turn the world of golf instruction upside down as anything in recent memory.

It's the move that led the U.S. Open through three rounds this year. It's the move that's led to the resurgence of the careers of a number of pros, including former Masters champ Mike Weir. It's a move pros have been adopting in quantity, and a move amateurs have been adopting with sometimes remarkable success.

It's also been a few months since the Golf Digest article first hit newsstands. I postulated that a lot of the early success amateurs were experiencing was simply a result of a temporary short-circuiting of their brain and that, eventually, the old swing flaws would return. Perhaps that was a bit short-sighted…

My question for the S&T adoptees now is simply this: have your swing flaws returned? Or have you stuck with Stack and Tilt with improved ball-striking and scoring? Post in the comments below.

I scoffed at the Stack and Tilt swing (click the link above for a description) when I first saw it in print. Most of my reaction was due to the horrible "traditional swing" pictures that were displayed alongside the stack-and-tilt swings. "Only a big duffer swings like that!" I thought to myself. I also thought "if Stack and Tilt were so great, someone would have come up with it a long time ago. Tiger would probably be hitting the ball that way, and a bunch more golfers besides Aaron Baddeley would be using it."

One of the first lessons most golfers learn is to “keep your eye on theball.” I’m here to offer a better suggestion: Move your eyes behind theball.

That’s because when a golfer makeshis or her backswing with a full turn of the shoulders and a propershift of weight, the center of his or her chest, or sternum, will bewell behind the ball. (Exactly how far behind the ball depends on anindividual’s suppleness and flexibility.)

If a golfer moves to his or her right side during the backswing, yetkeeps the eyes locked on the golf ball, there’s a good chance he or shewill change his or her spine angle or fall into a reverse pivot, eitherof which is a huge power leak. That’s because the eyes automaticallytell the golfer whether he or she has formed a bad relationship withthe ball and he or she will have to “reach” or “stretch” to get back toit.

Trust me—the ball will be there on the downswing. It’s not goinganywhere. Get used to relying on your peripheral vision to see theball. By moving your focus behind the ball, you’ll increase thelikelihood of making a proper athletic move during the swing andstaying down through the shot. These two factors will promote bettercontact and more distance. So alter your focus and guarantee a strongerturn and more distance.
