ACTIVITIES & MS MS is a life-long
illness, and symptoms can change daily or hourly, therefore,
knowledge of MS and its symptoms is paramount for a healthy and
happy lifestyle. Many find that fatigue is problematic when
participating in an activity so taking short breaks in between can
be helpful in continuing an
activity/routine.
Exercise
Exercise is an
essential aspect in maintaining health and wellness. Your physician
can assist you in selecting a program that will work best for you.
Several activities MS patients have found beneficial while
strengthening muscle tone are listed below:
- Swimming
- Yoga
- Tai Chi
- Horseback Riding
- Exercise with light weights
Exercise not only
preserves health but is also a good way to relieve tension. Note:
Speak with your physician prior to beginning with any exercise
program.
Diet
Many diets have been recommended
for MS patients, however, the best advice would be to have a
nutritionally balanced diet that includes all of the required
vitamins and minerals, including fruits and vegetables. Any change
in your diet should be discussed with your
physician.
Enjoyment
Activities that provide
pleasure are important to participate in because of the emotional
effect it produces. A fundamental aspect of leading a full, happy
and rewarding life is to sustain a healthy, positive attitude.
Moderation is key whenever you join in on an activity, including
those that are enjoyable, because fatigue and other symptoms can
occur; therefore, taking a short break is usually
helpful.
Another area that many persons enjoy is traveling.
Traveling is a wonderful way to learn new cultures. When scheduling
a trip, discuss any disability issues with the travel agent,
airline, hotel, and other service industries. The following tips are
recommended to ensure an enjoyable, hassle-free vacation:
- Plan Ahead
- Ask Questions
- Obtain all medications/prescriptions needed
- Obtain information for the rental of assistive devices
